Stranraer Oyster Festival 2023

During September 2023, Amey South-West Trunk Roads supported the Stranraer Development Trust in the run up to their annual Oyster Festival.

The primary aim of the Trust is to achieve sustainable regeneration of the community of Stranraer by addressing a range of economic, social, environmental, and cultural issues. It furthers projects that increase opportunities, improve the attractiveness of the town, attract more visitors, and revive a perceived lost sense of pride in the town and what it has to offer.

The Stranraer Oyster Festival is credited with ‘changing the story’ of the town, promoting its potential for tourism. The three-day festival attracts thousands of visitors and celebrates the Loch Ryan Oyster Fishery, which is the last remaining wild native oyster fishery in Scotland. Amey assisted by installing string lighting at the harbour as well as donating tower lights, and yellow signs to direct festival goers to the site, which were placed across the road network. In total, 96 Amey volunteer hours were used to support this event.

Romano Petrucci at the Stranraer Development Trust said: “We are all extremely grateful to everyone at Amey for the superb support of this year’s Oyster Festival. The introduction of festival floodlights and in particular harbourside festoon lighting transformed the evenings of the event. We were blown away by the positive comments from traders, locals and visitors on how amazing the lights were and what a difference they made to our site and event. Again, thank you for your support and we look forward to more opportunities where we can work with Amey”.
