BRAKE Road Safety Week 2022

Supporting BRAKE Road Safety Week 2022

BRAKE road safety week 2022 takes place between Monday 14th November and Sunday 20th November 2022 and Amey South-West Trunk Roads are thrilled to once again be taking part. This year’s theme is Safe Roads For All, bringing communities and professionals together to ensure that everyone has the right to make safe and healthy journeys on our roads. The week will end with World Day of Remembrance for Road Victims on Sunday 20th November 2022.

This year we teamed up with Largs Primary School to design our Road Safety Week mascot, receiving 230 entries from pupils across the whole school. The winning mascot is Patient Pencil, encouraging road users and pedestrians to make more mindful journeys to ensure we have safe roads for all. Throughout the week, we will be sharing some of Patient Pencil’s best road safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe on the roads this winter and beyond.

Patient Pencil, designed by pupil Leah Mitchell, is inspired by The Pencil, a Largs monument that commemorates the Battle of Largs 1263, when the Scots defeated King Haco of Norway's troops on the shore at Largs, after 160 long ships got caught in a storm.

BRAKE aims to raise awareness of key areas of road safety that the government supports, including safe roads, safe vehicles and speeds, the newly introduced hierarchy of road users, and the importance of inclusivity in order to keep everyone safe on the roads, no matter how they travel. This is achieved via BRAKE’s three key points:

  • THINK about how we can all use roads safely to protect ourselves and other road users
  • UNDERSTAND how safe roads can enable everyone to make safe and healthy journeys
  • REMEMBER road crash victims and share their stories
