Keep Scotland Beautiful | Spring Clean 2024

National call to action for #SpringCleanScotland 2024!

Amey South-West Trunk Roads are supporting Keep Scotland Beautiful’s call to action to tackle Scotland’s litter emergency this Spring. In 2023 our operatives removed 5,246 bags of litter from our roadsides, weighing over 33.5 tonnes (the equivalent weight of nine hippos!). In addition, 4,849 large objects were uplifted. Shockingly, these figures only account for our northern routes, which include the M8, M898, M77, M74, and M80, not the entirety of the South-West trunk road network. We work in partnership with local authorities to clear roadside rubbish and tidy verges on our southern routes such as the A77, A76, and A75.

54% of litter on our roads is caused by people eating and drinking on the go. This litter is not only a blight to our environment and harmful to wildlife but is also extremely dangerous and expensive for our operatives to recover. We urge everyone to be a responsible road user, take your litter home, and protect the natural beauty of our country.

#SpringCleanScotland 2024 takes place from Friday 15th March until Sunday 28th April 2024. Last year more than 30,000 people across Scotland rolled up their sleeves, equipped with litter pickers, bags and gloves to make a positive difference to their own neighbourhoods. With four key themes - Nature, Communities, Health & Wellbeing and Marine Litter – this year, it is time for everyone to step up and play their part.  Every action, however small, makes a difference. Just half an hour of picking up litter and disposing of it safely can help an area look cleaner and feel safer.
