Temporary Speed Restrictions Between Largs & Skelmorlie

A78 Largs-Skelmorlie

New Temporary Speed Restrictions on the A78 Between Largs and Skelmorlie

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland as part of the Network Management Contract for the South-West Trunk Road Unit, and in collaboration with Police Scotland, has installed a temporary 40mph speed limit to the A78 along the Largs-Skelmorlie route. This is expected to be in place for up to 18 months to provide additional protection while remedial work is carried out on the coastal fence.

The signs in place at present are temporary and will be replaced by 40 roundel markings. Replacement speed limit signage for the verges is currently in the design stage. Additionally, Mobile Vehicle Activated Signs will be placed at several laybys along this section of the road, with a view to replacing them with permanent signage.

This work will involve:

  • Upgrading the existing road markings with new edge line road studs
  • Installing additional signage on bends in the road
  • Providing a footway to assist walkers on the route between Skelmorlie Castle Road and Meigle Road

North Ayrshire Road Safety

In November 2022, Amey teamed up with Largs Primary School to design a road safety mascot. After much careful deliberation, Patient Pencil, designed by P5 pupil Leah Mitchell, was selected as the winner. Patient Pencil aims to encourage road users and pedestrians to make more mindful journeys to ensure we have safe roads for all. Patient Pencil will promote all future road safety initiatives in this area, and we thank road users for their patience and collaboration while this essential work takes place.
