M8 Woodside Viaducts J16-J17

INTRODUCTION

Planned works will see the installation of temporary bridge props installed adjacent to the main bridge piers at several locations below the bridge deck, in preparation for a permanent repair. Pre-construction work and investigations commenced on Friday 12th March 2021.

To ensure the safety of road workers and the travelling public, speed and lane restrictions will be in place on the M8 for the full extent of these structures; and associated eastbound slip roads at Junctions 17 and Junction 18 and westbound slip roads at Junction 15 on slip and Junction 17 off slip will be closed. Slip roads at Junction 16 remain open. Signed diversion routes are in operation.

Narrowed lanes have been introduced on the mainline of the M8 through the structures. HGVs are being encouraged to consider using an alternative route due to these narrow sections.

Road users are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time to complete their journey. We thank the travelling public, stakeholders, residents, and businesses, who are impacted for their patience while this essential refurbishment work takes place.

M8 WOODSIDE VIADUCTS INVESTIGATION WORKS COMMENCE MONDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2022

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, are undertaking essential overnight investigation works as part of the M8 Woodside Viaducts repair scheme. These require closures of the A82 Great Western Road flyover between St George’s Cross Underground station and the Junction 17 on-slip of the M8 westbound at Stow College - and lane restrictions at the Cowcaddens Road/West Graham Street junction - from Monday 28th November until Friday 2nd December 2022, between the hours of 10pm and 6am, each night.

These investigations will inform future stages of work on the M8 Woodside Viaducts. The work will be carried out in phases, initially using a full overnight closure of the eastbound and westbound Great Western Road, with a signed diversion route in operation.

Eastbound traffic will be directed to leave Great Western Road via Maryhill Road and will join St George’s Road before continuing on to Garscube Road. From here, traffic will use the Cowcaddens Road/West Graham Street junction to continue their journey eastbound.

The second phase of the works requires a closure on the straight-ahead lane from Cowcaddens Road to West Graham Street. While this is in place, traffic will be directed north on Garscube Road and will then travel west on A804 Phoenix Road and then north on Maryhill Road to return to Great Western Road via Napiershall Street. At the same time, the Rose Street entrance to Cowcaddens Junction will also be closed, with traffic being diverted via Buccleuch Street, Dallhousie Street and Renfrew Street to then continue their journey via Cambridge Street.

Depending on the progress of the initial phase, the second phase is likely to commence for three nights from either Wednesday 30th November or Thursday 1st December 2022. At times during this phase there will be lane restrictions in force on the Cowcaddens Road/West Graham Street junction, but traffic will still be able to travel through without the need for a further diversion.

We thank road users for their patience and co-operation while these essential investigation work takes place.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works.

Phoenix Road will be closed eastbound to facilitate the next phase of propping to the eastbound viaduct at two locations adjacent to Phoenix Road, and will remain in place until work at this location is completed.

The initial work will allow the completion of groundworks to facilitate the propping installation at the eastbound bridge supports. This will allow completion of ongoing repair works. The works will extend onto the carriageway there is no other safe option for vehicles to pass.

A signed diversion route will be in operation while this work is taking place.

Eastbound traffic intending to use the eastbound A804 Phoenix Road will be directed on to St George’s Road and then Garscube Road.

Vehicles will still be able to access the westbound M8 on-slip road via Phoenix Road, and the westbound A804 is unaffected by this closure.

OCTOBER 2021

M8 JUNCTION 18 EASTBOUND ON-SLIP ROAD TO RE-OPEN SUNDAY  24th OCTOBER 2021

The M8 Junction 18 eastbound on-slip road will re-open from 6:30am on Sunday 24th October 2021. This is the latest phase of traffic management related to the ongoing maintenance work taking place on the M8 at Woodside Viaducts from Junction 16 to Junction 17.

The eastbound Junction 18 on-slip will be reduced in length and a new road marking layout and temporary speed restriction will be in place to allow a merge with the M8 eastbound mainline. Existing traffic management will remain the same at other locations on the M8 Junctions 16 to 17, and adjacent roads.

Please note, traffic flows at peak times are likely to increase at Junction 18 once this slip is re-opened and road users are advised to plan the time of their journey accordingly or seek an alternative route if possible.

This traffic management will assist with the safe excavation and installation of the specialist temporary bridge propping system below M8 Woodside Viaducts. The initial design phase of the bridge propping system is nearing completion, and the preparations for the installation of the temporary propping are well underway.

The permanent bridge repair continues to undergo a detailed design review and our team is carrying out enhanced engagement with stakeholders to minimise disruption within the area. Each stage of the programme will be rolled out soon as it is agreed, to reduce the overall length of the repair and maximise efficiency by ensuring progressive stages of the work overlap.

AUGUST 2021

An initial trial site excavation has been completed, which was undertaken to expose one of the buried foundations and allowed for preparatory concreting works necessary to support the installation of temporary bridge props. The trial excavation has provided our engineers with valuable information on the below ground conditions, which will help inform further design and construction work at the subsequent bridge piers.

The first stage of the construction programme involves the excavation, piling or construction of high-level support works around the existing bridge columns. This work commenced on Sunday 15th August 2021

To facilitate the first stage of these programmed works, a three-phase traffic management scheme commenced, 24/7, along the A804 Phoenix Road:

  • Traffic Management Phase 1a was installed during the evening of Sunday 15th August 2021 and required nearside lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound A804, Phoenix Road, between Garscube Roundabout and the M8 West on-slip road for Junction 17. Left-only access was put in place to New City Road. A signed diversion route operated via New City Road, Shamrock Street, and Scott Street. This diversion continued onto West Graham Street and Garscube Road.

  • Traffic Management Phase 1b will be installed during the evening of Sunday 22nd August 2021 with a lane restriction in place on the M8 Junction 17 West on-slip road, situated beyond the right-hand turn from the A804, Phoenix Road. This is to allow for excavation works under the viaduct.

  • Traffic Management Phase 1c dates will be confirmed nearer the time with a nearside lane closure on the A804, Dobbie’s Loan for access to the M8 Junction 16 Eastbound on-slip road.

Please note, each traffic management scheme will be an extension of what is already in place. No traffic management measures will be removed prior to the next traffic management scheme commencing.

Public access will be maintained for the pedestrian underpass beneath Phoenix Road, which will be accessible via the construction of a temporary ramp. Closed pedestrian access will be well signposted at the site with alternative routes.

Future construction stages of the project will see the installation of the bridge propping system and jacking of the structures to complete repairs to the crossheads. These future stages are undergoing a detailed design review and our team is carrying out enhanced engagement with stakeholders to minimise disruption within the area. Each stage of the programme will be rolled out soon as it is agreed, to reduce the overall length of the repair and maximise efficiency by ensuring progressive stages of the work overlap.

While road users may not see significant activity on the M8 motorway where temporary lane closures are currently in place, a considerable amount of investigation, design, stakeholder, and construction activities are ongoing below the structure.
