Amey Green Driver Initiative

The biggest environmental impact that Amey has is through how we use fossil fuels. In the delivery of our services, we use around 10 million litres of fossil fuels a year. One of the ways we can tackle this is by changing driver behaviour. This lies at the heart of the Green Driver Initiative that runs across Amey Transport Infrastructure contracts in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We understand the impact that fuel efficiency has on the environment and this initiative is delivered through clear communication, training, monitoring, motivation, and rewards.

The Green Driver Initiative involves training delivered by specialist providers to educate and support our team to make small changes to their driving style that make a big difference. This can include mileage analysis, fuel consumption, and coaching sessions with mentors. Alongside the training, our drivers’ performance data, such as miles per gallon, harsh braking, acceleration and cornering, speeding, location, mileage, and idling, is monitored through our Masternaut fleet telematics system and an in-cab coach warns a driver when it detects poor driving practices. This recorded data can be viewed in an online portal and reports can be created to aid analysis.

In South-West Scotland, the scheme has delivered a miles-per-gallon improvement of 13.29% since its inception in 2021 with little-to-no impact on journey time or average speed. The Green Driver Initiative is now being rolled out across other Amey contracts, while in Scotland and Northern Ireland, our greenest drivers are rewarded quarterly through the Green Driver Award scheme.
