Today, Saturday 9th September 2023, marks World EV Day, a global event asking businesses, policymakers, and individuals how they will drive change to support the shift to a decarbonised society. Amey South-West Trunk Roads are celebrating the eMobility movement by announcing that 63.8% of their car and van fleet (under 3.5 tonnes) is now comprised of ultra low emission vehicles. This figure means that not only has a key fleet milestone been reached 20 months ahead of schedule on the 8-year trunk road network maintenance contract for Transport Scotland, but it also exceeds the 50% target set for 2025.  

In August 2023, Amey South-West Trunk Roads made a significant investment of £497,000 in their EV fleet by welcoming 13 electric Volkswagen ID.3 vehicles. The vehicles, with a mileage range between 250 and 270 miles, are used by highways supervisors delivering key operational services across South-West Scotland and signal Amey’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of ULEVs on their journey to net-zero.

Since the commencement of the trunk road maintenance contract in August 2020 EVs in the South-West fleet have completed 75,455 miles, making carbon savings of 27tCO2e compared to their fossil fuel burning equivalents. These carbon savings will only increase as Amey has adopted an “EV First” policy, where electric vehicles will always be the first option for all new company cars.

Amey’s pledge to support our clients with energy transition and sustainable infrastructure solutions has been bolstered by a substantial EV charging point installation at Transport Scotland’s Polmadie depot in Glasgow. The site now boasts 26 AC and 2 DC charging points with Amey’s Ayr depot in South Ayrshire earmarked for the next phase of EV infrastructure improvements. These installations are fundamental in future proofing fleet and plant to maintain Scotland’s South-West Trunk Roads.
