Help Name Our Gritters!

GRITTER NAMING APPEAL 2023/2024

Our winter service vehicles, in their distinctive bright orange livery, will become a regular sight on the trunk road network this winter. We are once again running our popular gritter-naming appeal, which in 2023 alone led to almost 4,000 gritter names being submitted by the Scottish public for consideration.

We are asking the public to submit their family-friendly suggestions to Amey here.

Entries will be accepted from Wednesday 8th November 2023. Only entries submitted via the Microsoft Form will be considered.

The newly named gritters will join classics such as “Sir Grits Hoy”, “Yes Sir, Ice Can Boogie”, “Skid Vicious”, “Sweet Child O’ Brine”, "Gritney Spears", and "Jack Jarvice & Victor McSprayed".

Scotland’s tradition of coming up with inventive and fun names for their gritter fleet has gone viral on social media and made headlines around the world.

In December 2020, our new orange fleet attracted the attention of IRN-BRU®, with gritter Grits You Thru joining Amey South-West Trunk Road's winter service. And in 2021, another iconic Scottish treat joined the fleet with staff at family-run bakery Tunnock’s coining a vehicle Caramelt Wafer.

The results of the naming appeal can be followed on our Facebook and Twitter channels (@SWTrunkRoads) and Scotland's trunk road gritter fleet can be tracked in real-time on the Traffic Scotland Gritter Tracker.

Keep checking here over the Winter period to see more animations unveiled for our newly-named Gritters.
